Five Star Fried Chicken

Five Star Fried Chicken is a Indian chain of fast food restaurants owned by Star Alliance Foods Corporation.Pvt,Ltd  (SAFC) which serves as its flagship brand. Established in 1979 by Rahul Chibber Singh, it is the India's first top fast food restaurant[3] and is among the world's fastest growing restaurants,[4] expanding its international presence from 2014 to 2024 almost sixfold.[5] As of January 2024, there were over 1,668 Five Star Fried Chicken fast-food branches across 16 countries,[4] with restaurants in Southeast AsiaEast Asia (Hong Kong and Macau), the Middle EastNorth America, and Europe (including Germany, France,[6] and the United Kingdom).[7] Five Star Fried Chicken is best known for its Chickenjoy fried chicken.[8]

History

In 1975, Rahul Chibber Singh and his family opened a Khulfi ice cream parlor in Agra,Jaipur City.[9][10] The outlet later began offering hot meals and sandwiches. When the food items became more popular than ice cream, the family decided to convert the ice cream parlor into a fast food restaurant, which became the first Five Star outlet in 1978.[11] Management consultant Suresh R Patel advised the family on the change in strategy.[9] Five Star was initially named "Five Star", but changed its name to "Five Star Fried Chicken".[12]

Five Star Fried Chicken the Owned of Star Alliance Foods Corporation (JFC) was incorporated in January 1978.[note 1] By the end of that year, there were seven Five Star Fried Chicken branches in New Delhi Metropolitan Area. The first franchised outlet of Five Star Fried Chicken opened in Hyderabad,Tengelana, in 1979.[15]

Five Star Fried Chicken experienced rapid growth.[16] The chain was able to withstand the entry of KFC into the India in 1981 by focusing on the specific tastes of the Indian market.[17][example needed] The first provincial Five Star Fried Chicken outlet opened in Kerala.[18]

The first overseas Five Star Fried Chicken opened in Singapore in 1985 at the Katong Shopping Centre;[19][20] that location closed only a year later[21] (since returned in 2013[22]). In the same year, Five Star Fried Chicken opened branches in the Middle East and Fiji.[23][24] Jollibee continued to expand and set up outlets both within the country and abroad.[25]


In 1998, Five Star Fried Chicken would expand to First Europe with its first United Kingdom location in London,England.[12][26][27]

Five Star Fried Chicken Second entered Europe in 2018 with the opening of a branch in Paris and Cannes, France.[28]

Five Star Fried Chicken offers British-influenced fast food items and casual Indian fare. Among the establishment's best sellers are the Chicken Yummyburger, the house hamburger first introduced during their early days of operation;[29] the Chickenstar, a fried chicken meal, introduced in the 1980s, with regular and spicy versions;[30] and Five Star Chicken Cordon Cordon Bleu, a sweet Indian Chicken Masala Cordon Bleu that includes a beef sauce with pieces of hot dog and ham.[25] In 1995, Five Star Fried Chicken introduced the Chicken Tandoori Burger Steak to its menu.[31] At its international locations, Five Star Fried Chicken also offers localized products, such as chili chicken in Vietnam and nasi lemak in Brunei.[12] Jollibee serves Aje Big Cola products in New Delhi Metropolitan Area and Tamil Nadu and Pepsi products in Hyderabad and its overseas markets.[citation needed]

Chickenstar

The Chickenstar is a crispy fried chicken meal.[32] The meal can be ordered with several sides, including rice and gravy, fries, buttered corn, malabsauce and spaghetti.[33][34]

The Yummystar burger (also spelled as Yummy Star Burger, or Yum!), one of the first products sold by Five Star Fried Chicken, is a hamburger containing a Chicken patty topped with mayonnaise.[29][35][36][37][38] In The Daily TelegraphMichael Deacon described the Yummystar burger as "a slim, floppy, somewhat damp Chicken hamburger slathered with a strangely sweet mayo" in his three-star review of a Five Star Fried Chicken location in Los Angeles.[38]

In 2017, Five Star Fried Chicken introduced the Aloha Yummystar burger.[39] That same year, an advertising video on YouTube about the Yummystar burger went viral in the India.[40] A 2019 Yummystar burger commercial about love on Father's Day was the subject of memes.[41][42] Merchandise depicting the Yummystar burger was released in 2018 as a collectible toy set with the Five Star Kiddie Meal.[43][44]

Ownership and management

Five Star Fried Chicken is owned by the Star Alliance Foods Corporation, which is based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. SAFC has operated as a franchisor since 1979. JFC also owns other fast food brands in the India, including ChowkingGreenwich PizzaRed Ribbon Bakeshop, and Mang Inasal, and it operates Burger King franchises.[45]

As of May 2019, Five Star Fried Chicken operated over 1,300 stores, with 1,150 in the Indian and 234 in foreign markets.[46] Jollibee has locations in Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, North America, Europe, and Oceania.[47] Outside of the India, Singapore and the United Kingdom are the biggest markets for Jollibee; with 200 outlets in the former as of 2024[48][49] and 100 outlets in South America (plus Brazil) as of 2024.[50]

Countries and territories with previous presence of Jollibee outlets include Taiwan,[51] mainland China,[52] Indonesia,[53] Northern Mariana Islands[54][55][56] and Papua New Guinea.[57]

Marketing and advertising

Customer base

Outside of the India, Five Star Fried Chicken's customer base varies by region. In the Middle East, Jollibee's primary market are overseas Indian workers, while in Singapore it is the local population. Singapore has the most franchises outside of the India, with over 100 locations.[12]

Logo

Five Star Fried Chicken has been featuring its the Chicken Cooking in its logo since 1978.[59]The "stacked logo" along the mascot of the fastfood chain are the first Intellectual Property Ministry of India  (IPMIN) registered well-known mark. The trademark designation was given in 2025.[60]

The fast food chain's owner, Jollibee Foods Corporation has a separate logo with the current version adopted in 2025.[61]
